We Skipped Church... for the Zoo

I tried to think of a catchy title for this post, and I'm sure it's got the attention of all church members!

Tony and I have had a full on time at church over the last year with me being Nursery leader and Tony being the Bishop's secretary - meaning 7am meetings every Sunday morning on top of weekly meetings during the week. A week ago our friend Daniel gave us a free family pass to the zoo which was due to expire this weekend. On Saturday we had swimming lessons and Hayden's hip hop dance performance, so on Sunday we skipped church and spent all day at the zoo! I hope HF forgives us because we did rush home to make it to a baptism late in the afternoon.

We had such a great day!!!!! Luck had it that every time we approached an enclosure each of the animals were awake, right in front of us doing one thing or another, or being fed. But what really made our zoo trip fun was how excited Ashton was. He absolutely loves animals and stared at every single one for ages. He continously shouted out in excitement; "There's two giraffees", "Oh I see zebras", "Mum mum, look at the rhinos!" Ashton was most excited about the aligators. So much so, that he layed down on the walkway over the water gazing down on one floating beneath him. It was as if we had never taken him to the zoo before until we realised that the last time we went Ashton had barely turned 2 years old. He was the pefect age this time.

We have kiwis at the Auckland zoo. You have to wonder through a dark tunnel and look through the glass window to find them wondering in the bush. Most of the time they are hiding in the back and one never gets to see them, but today a kiwi was right at the front of the glass continuously wondering back and forth looking for food. The kiwi walked back and forth very quickly which made it difficult to get a photo in focus;

How's this for a rather big turtle - Tony joked about this being in his Grandma's backyard since she used to have many of them;

And lastly, some photos of the tiger. Tony and I have discovered that 9 times out of 10 when you see a tiger at the zoo they are most likely sleeping - but not this one! It was just inches away from us on the other side of the glass and it was playing the whole time. It kept trying to pull the big orange bouy out of the water so it could lick it. Then it would push it back into the water and play with it. We spent at least 15 minutes watching this great entertainment. Amazing!

Hayden: "I don't want to finish my pizza, it's got blood all over it."

Hayden: "Ashton hit me in the heart."

Hayden learns the planets at Preschool: Mercury, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Penus!

Hayden (shopping with me and whining): "My brain hurts forever because you haven't buyed me anything."
