I have this beautiful hutch in the corner of our dining room. When the kids were younger, I always had it decorated with lovely photos in frames, vases, ornaments etc. But as the kids grew, so did their lego collection. So I realised the kids needed somewhere to display the things they'd made, and it was time to put the 'pretty' things away.
I actually love the shelves filled with lego, it's so meaningful to me and represents the childhood years gone by. I will forever have images in my head of the countless hours of lego building, and the many Christmas' they were so excited to get a new lego set. These days Ashton is the only one still into lego and he refuses to buy anything else other than Star Wars pieces. You really can't beat the Star Wars collection, nothing else compares to it! Ashton even likes displaying his Stars Wars boxes.
Juliet had mufti day at school 2 weeks ago (it's usually a fundraiser where the kids don't have to wear their school uniforms, but in order to wear their casual clothes they have to bring a gold coin donation of $1 or $2) It's a great fundraiser - the school usually makes around $700. And the kids LOVE it! Juliet was so excited and carefully picked out what she was going to wear (thank goodness we don't have to go through that every single school day!!) She also wanted her hair done really pretty, so the day before she asked her favourite teacher from last year if she could stay after school to braid her hair. Mrs Blau always does a beautiful job.
Ashton is very, very dedicated to his fitness. He lifts 10kg arm weights everyday and he doesn't leave the house in the morning without doing his press-ups first. He does them on the driveway no matter where he's heading....school, seminary, even church (but he gets told off for that as we don't want him working up a sweat in his church clothes). He had a habit this year of lifting his weights right before bedtime. I kept wondering why on earth his bed was smelling so much, and then I realised he was getting into a clean bed all sweaty and stinky. We've put a stop to that. But his dedication is incredible, and completely comes from him. No one pushes him, he's dedicated all on his own.
When a child or teenager realises that school is not their strength and never will be (as in the case with Ashton and his dyslexia) life is hard. After all, they go to an environment everyday to be made aware that they're no good at the environment they're living in. In Ashton's case, this forced him to find something he's good at. Something that would grow his confidence and help him to believe in himself.
I am incredibly proud of him for having the courage and maturity to help himself in this way. Funny thing is, we knew Glenfield College was the right High School for Ashton, and it truly has been. He has a massive connection with his Gym teacher who's a big part of his life, and just so happens to be Mormon. Mr Bickford is an amazing role model and mentor for Ashton. Their relationship even extends to Ashton frequently getting rides home from school with Mr Bickford and his family, and Ashton always joining him on day hikes during the school holidays. Even during our covid lockdowns this year, Ashton did fitness classes with Mr Bickford on zoom. We feel positive that Ashton wouldn't have connected with a teacher this way had he attended the massive 'all boys' high school that Noah and Hayden go to.
There are usually 4 places we can find Ashton when he's home:
1. In his bed on his cell phone laughing at funny you tube videos with Noah
2. At the computer playing video games with Noah
3. In the bathroom working on his arm muscles in front of the mirror
4. At the dining room table drinking his daily smoothie which he makes everyday after school. His smoothies consist of the same thing everyday which is organic quick oats, protein powder, organic peanut butter, banana, berries, juice, lettuce and any other fruit or veggies he can find in the fridge.
