Noah (age 3 1/2) has started going to kindy/preschool 2 days a week. The kindy (a different place to where Ashton attended) is affiliated with a large church conveniently opposite my mum's house. They offer morning and afternoon sessions from 9-12.30 and 12.30-3, but they also provide a cooked lunch inbetween sessions for those parents who work from 9-3 or would prefer 2 sessions in one day as opposed to 2 separate days. Noah goes on a Wednesday and Friday, stays for both sessions and gets the cooked lunch. Both sessions are structured with lots of activities and preparing the children for school. Noah LOVES kindy and all the fun things they do. He especially loves it that his little friend Christopher goes too. One of Noah's favourite activities is on a Wednesday afternoon when the children get to bake cookies in the kitchen together.
Thanks to Christopher being there, Noah has adjusted easily to being away from me during the day, although he does have a hard time when I first drop him off. He starts fretting in the car before we arrive at kindy, telling me he really wants to go home. Every morning he tries hard to hold back the tears, his voice cracks and his bottom lip turns down with sadness. We have lots of big hugs and I have to put him in the arms of a teacher for comfort (otherwise he stands alone and cries), but within a few minutes he's having a great time. The nicest thing is that when I pick him up at the end of the day he is so happy to see me and comes running into my arms with a huge smile on his face! What more could a mum want!
One of the reasons I like this kindy so much is because the children get some religion. Each month the children focus on something different, but this month they have been focusing on why the Bible is important today. The 4 yr olds have been learning a verse from Psalms and the 3 year olds have been learning about light; how the Bible is like a light that shows you the way. Last week Noah bought home a yellow painted rock (that he had done himself) with the verse ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.’
I really didn't want to get Noah into kindy until he was 4 (especially since he is such a good boy at home) but I knew he needed to be socializing more with other kids and he was definitely starting to get bored around the house. Despite my attempts at fun activities at home, it wasn't giving him all the stimulation he needed. We have a real good balance in our week now between 'home time', 'special' time just for Noah and 'special' time just for me. Finding that balance really is the key to everyone being fulfilled and happy.
From a mum's persepctive I enjoy having 2 days to myself to get all my cleaning and shopping done without any interruptions or holdups, but it sure is strangely quiet without a little companion in the car and house. I always have a long list of things to get accomplished on Wednesdays and Fridays, but somehow the 6 hours of total freedom vanishes soooo fast!
