Step by Step Improvements

Lately, our family has been trying really hard to make our home a little more gospel centered.

Here are a few goals we came up with. We haven't had 100 percent success at following these things, but we're doing way better than we've ever done before. We're finally on a roll with having FHE every Monday night and we made a first big decision to keep the Sabbath day Holy.

Our little story about keeping the Sabbath Day Holy;
A couple of months ago Hayden was begging to be on the school Basketball team. We gladly signed him up.

About a week before the first practice, he received a notice that practices would be from 3.30-4.30 Sunday afternoons, and if the time or day wasn't suitable then we could let the coach know.
So, I emailed the coach and kindly asked if practices could be at any other time, as our family liked to keep Sundays reserved for church and family activities only.

While we waited for a response, Hayden was once again begging to know whether he could play. The coach finally emailed back saying that Sunday suited all the other parents, and due to his work commitments Sunday was the best day for him as well. He finished off his email by saying that he really looked forward to seeing Hayden at the practices and that it was very important for him to be there.

Although we knew exactly what to do, deciding wasn’t easy – until we discussed it with Hayden. We were so proud of Hayden when we explained the situation and that Sunday is the Sabbath and that it wasn’t right to play basketball on Sundays. He was very disappointed but not as upset as we expected.

In the end, I wrote one last email to the coach explaining that we had to pull Hayden off the team. I asked him if there was another school team that Hayden could join and wished him and his team the best. I never heard back from the coach.

So I contacted the teacher in charge of athletics. He asked if we could give him a couple of days to work things out. Come to find out that there was a second basketball team. And, even though the team already had enough players; he put Hayden onto the second team which practices at school during lunch time.

Hayden has been playing for a few weeks now, but the other day he brought home another notice explaining that one of the boys on the team, Mitchell, fractured his ankle, was in a plaster cast and wouldn't be able to play for a few weeks.

Had it not been for Hayden’s obedience in keeping the Sabbath day holy, his new team would now be a player short.

Hayden: "I don't want to finish my pizza, it's got blood all over it."

Hayden: "Ashton hit me in the heart."

Hayden learns the planets at Preschool: Mercury, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Penus!

Hayden (shopping with me and whining): "My brain hurts forever because you haven't buyed me anything."
